How is Stainless Steel used in Hydrogen Generators?

Written by Jake on April 28, 2009 – 7:27 pm -

There are many metals that can be used to make a hydrogen generator. Most individuals use stainless steel 316L because stainless steel is cheaper than specialty metals such as gold and platinum. When hydrogen is produced, it is acidic to metal. Metals such as lead and aluminum are damaged very quickly, compromising the effectiveness of your hydrogen generator. Stainless steel is used in hydrogen generators in the form of tubing, wire, canisters, and stainless steel plates. The use of 316L stainless steel plates prolongs the life of your hydrogen generator and allows for less maintenance which is more cost effective for the consumer.

Many popular designs of Hydrogen Generator use stainless steel twisted wire and stainless steel plates for the electrodes. The twisted wire pulls less electricity from the alternator while the plates add more surface area. Stainless steel plates should be as thin as possible which allows for more surface area providing the opportunity for more efficient cell use in converting water into oxygen/hydrogen. It has been reported that if the plates have indentations in them, it will create even more surface for the hydrogen atoms to bond to. It is also recommended that you mount the hydrogen generator with stainless steel bolts and use stainless steel light switch covers with rubber bushing between them. Stainless steel is also reported to be the metal of choice in hydrogen generators because of its cost effectiveness and its ability to enhance the production of hydrogen gas over other more expensive metals.
